The U.S.-backed cease-fire agreement in Gaza has crushed the Israeli right’s maximalist, even eliminationist fantasies, which it stoked for as long as the war grinded on. President Donald Trump has made clear that there will be no formal annexation of the occupied West Bank. There will be no forced transfer of the Palestinians in Gaza; the fevered talk of the Palestinians’ removal in February has proven to be a passing delusion. Nor will there be new Jewish settlements built on the ruins of the devastated Strip, at least not in the foreseeable future.
