Person in a chair with a desk in front of them moving virtual objects around.

Ever wondered how audio producers place sound in a 3D plane? They normally do it on a flat 2D monitor, with a depiction of 3d space. Neumann launched VIS (Virtual Immersive Studio), now producers can use the Apple Vision Pro to place sounds in 3D space.

Would you actually mix audio in a headset?

Yes, this looks useful

What is Neumann VIS? Virtual Immersive Studio explained

Virtual Immersive Studio runs on Dear Reality’s AMBEO technology, part of the Sennheiser group. AMBEO technology creates hardware and software solutions for spatial audio production. There are games, such as Hi-Fi RUSH, and Netflix Series Stranger Things, which have already made use of AMBEO technology. Making it easier for re-recording mixers to translate immersive mixes into a stereo format. Sennheiser has also created hardware like the Ambeo soundbar that uses the technology, which scored very well in our review.

Virtual Immersive Studio integrates directly with Logic Pro on Mac, functioning as a device within the application. This allows producers to view Logic Pro within the Apple Vision Pro. In addition to RIME (Reference Immersive Monitoring Environment), Neumann’s proprietary spatial audio plug-in, producers can achieve up to 7.1.4 surround sound. Head tracking on the Vision Pro determines and displays the locations of the sound sources in your space. Neumann claims this makes an exceptionally realistic monitoring experience.

The VIS app allows producers to use a 3D visual interface for spatial mixing on the Apple Vision Pro. Giving producers a visual overview of audio objects they can interact with through the Vision Pro. Instead of relying on a 2-D representation of a 3-D space. Producers can also view and place the regular Logic Pro interface anywhere in their virtual environment. This can also be done in any environment, using 2-channel setups such as headphones with the included RIME plugin.

The VIS plugin is now available for purchase through the Apple App Store. It requires you to have an Apple Vision Pro and a Mac running at least visionOS 26, and macOS 36 , with Logic Pro 11.2 or newer.

Would you add VR to your workflow to place sound in 3D space?

Yes, placing audio sources in VR makes sense.

No, using a screen is fine.

Yes, but I would like to use another DAW.

NaN%

No, it costs too much money with the Apple Vision Pro.
