Netflix might receive a thumbs-up from some viewers now that it has been reported that the streaming service canceled a controversial reboot after just one season.

The reported cancellation announcement of Netflix’s Good Times: Black Again, a cartoon revival and reimagining of the 1970s live-action hit Good Times, came amid continuous criticism that had surrounded the reboot since its April 2024 premiere. Outrage over Good Times: Black Again ensued after episodes in the short-lived series portrayed its characters as lazy and reinforced Black stereotypes.

Good Times: Black Again sparked so much backlash that civil rights organizations such as the NAACP and CEMOTAP spoke out against the program, and Netflix viewers constantly slammed it online.

“What is even this show Good Times: Black again??…Time to turn this off,” another X user wrote.

Not only did civil rights organizations and viewers dislike Good Times: Black Again, but critics also did. Currently, the now-canceled series holds a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show disturbed so many fans of the original series, as Good Times is historically revered for being the first sitcom to show a loving Black nuclear family. On top of that, it has been praised for decades for also showing Black Americans who strived to be morally just in all situations amid their ongoing adversity, portraying Black people in a very positive light.

Although times are changing, the family remains the same and continue trying to keep their head above water despite it being a constant challenge. Even though their struggle is real they get through it with much love.
