Fifty years after the original album’s release, and 14 years after a previous boxed set left some fans thinking there was still more in the vault to be mined, Pink Floyd‘s classic “Wish You Were Here” album will get 50th anniversary editions that include a greater wealth of unreleased material, collectively dubbed “Wish You Were Here 50.” The new sets arrive in stores Dec. 12.

One of the collection’s never-before-released tracks, “The Machine Song (Demo #2, Revisited),” an early version of “Welcome to the Machine,” was released to streaming services Friday as a teaser for the coming wealth of releases. Watch the lyric video here.

The announcement for the deluxe boxed set and other editions comes exactly on the 50th anniversary of the album, which was Pink Floyd’s follow-up to the band’s most popular album, “The Dark Side of the Moon,” and holds an equally special place in the hearts of many fans. The “Wish You Were Here 50” releases are part of what is expected to be an ongoing series of elaborate commemorative sets in the wake of Sony Music’s purchase of Pink Floyd’s music rights from band members for an estimated $400 million in 2024.

All told, the new boxed set version will include six previously unreleased alternate versions or demos. But other elements are of just as much interest to some collectors or audiophiles. One of those will be a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original album, done by James Guthrie. Another is the inclusion of a live album, taken from a 1975 Los Angeles Sports Arena audience tape, that has been restored and remixed by Steven Wilson and is getting an official commercial release for the first time.

The formats for the “50” releases are a 3-LP vinyl set, a 2-CD edition, a Blu-ray, the digital download version and — the mother lode, of course — a deluxe boxed set.

Although some veteran acts like the Beatles have shifted away from Blu-Ray releases, some hardcore Floyd fans who have commented on leaked news have been particularly delighted that a Blu-Ray exists, first of all, and then that it is included both in the deluxe boxed set and as a stand-alone edition. The latter is much more economical than the full box, of course, yet includes virtually all of the copious music (if none of the trinkets), save for a couple of tracks that appear to be exclusive to vinyl.

The Blu-ray includes three concert screen films from the band’s 1975 tour, plus a Storm Thorgerson short. The 3-LP and 2-CD releases include the original album and the nine studio bonus tracks. The deluxe boxed set includes all of the above — with the three LPs coming on clear vinyl exclusive to the larget set — plus a fourth vinyl LP (also on clear vinyl), “Live At Wembley 1974,” a replica Japanese 7-inch single of “Have a Cigar”/”Welcome To The Machine,” a hardcover book, a comic book tour program and a Knebworth concert poster.

Much of the bonus material is carried over from a previous boxed set, the Immersion edition, released in 2011, which is a staple in Pink Floyd fans’ collections even though it was deemed disappointing by some fans at the time.

What this new set has that is previously unreleased, besides the aforementioned “The Machine Song (Demo #2, Revisited),” includes “The Machine Song (Roger’s demo),” the first home demo of the song that Roger Waters originally brought to the band; a previously unheard instrumental mix of the track “Wish You Were Here” showcasing David Gilmour’s pedal steel guitar; and a complete “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts. 1-9)” that joins together two halves of the song that opened and closed the original album, newly mixed in stereo by Guthrie.

Fans are also particularly eager to hear what Wilson, a big name in the world of remixes of classic rock albums, has done with the 1975 Sports Arena audience tape to make it worthy of commercial release.

The “Wish You Were Here” sets follow the success of another Pink Floyd project this year under the band’s new Sony aegis — a remastered version of the group’s 1972 Pompeii concert film, with the refresh becoming a hit in Imax theaters nationwide, and a first-time official album release of the soundtrack, all dubbed “Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII.”
