Variety Awards Circuit section is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year, featuring the following: the official predictions for the upcoming OscarsEmmys, Grammys and Tony Awards ceremonies, curated by Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages reflect the current standings in the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any individual contender. As other formal (and informal) polls suggest, competitions are fluid and subject to change based on buzz and events. Predictions are updated every Thursday.

Critics Choice Awards Commentary (Updated: Dec. 4, 2025): As awards season shifts into high gear, all eyes turn to the Critics Choice — one of the most reliable predictors of Oscar success.

Selected by roughly 575 voting members, the Critics Choice Awards tend to reflect broader industry consensus, offering a temperature check on which films have captured critical hearts and minds.

Last season proved the organization’s predictive power. “Anora” used a Critics Choice best picture win to reassert itself after being shut out at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards — momentum it carried all the way to the Academy Awards. Three acting winners — Adrien Brody, Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña — also repeated at the Oscars.

This year, the CCA race appears to be taking shape around two clear frontrunners. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” are expected to lead the tally, followed closely by “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Wicked: For Good” and “Marty Supreme.” The diversity of this top tier — spanning prestige drama, genre filmmaking, literary adaptation and musical spectacle — shows a year without a single dominant narrative.

For the first time in its history, the CCA released an official shortlist across 11 artisan categories, spotlighting the behind-the-scenes craftspeople who created some of the year’s most acclaimed films. There is still an opportunity for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” from James Cameron to pop up in a few artisan races, and perhaps even best picture, especially coming after AFI and NBR top 10 mentions.

The group doesn’t always embrace non-English language films early in the race, as evidenced by “Anatomy of a Fall” nabbing a single nomination for international feature at the 2023 ceremony before later garnering multiple Oscar mentions including best picture and winning original screenplay. Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama “Sentimental Value” should perform solidly enough to secure several nominations, but Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident” may struggle to replicate its recent critical success with the organization.

The CCA film nominations will be announced Friday, Dec. 5.
