Following his visit to both the U.K. and Ukraine, Prince Harry gave a wide-ranging interview to The Guardian. In part of his extensive interview, the Duke of Sussex explained why he wrote his bombshell 2023 memoir, Spare, which included revelations about his life inside the royal family, including anecdotes about his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William.“My conscience is clear,” he said of writing the book.
Prince Harry gave an extensive interview to The Guardian—where he spoke, in part, about his rationale behind writing his explosive 2023 memoir Spare.
“I know that [speaking out] annoys some people and it goes against the narrative,” the Duke of Sussex told the outlet. “The book? It was a series of corrections to stories already out there. One point of view had been put out, and it needed to be corrected.”
“I don’t believe that I aired my dirty laundry in public,” he added. “It was a difficult message, but I did it in the best way possible. My conscience is clear.”

Harry just returned home to California after nearly a week away in the U.K. and, afterwards, Ukraine; during his time in London, he met on September 10 with his father, King Charles, for a 55-minute tea at the King’s home, Clarence House. It was the first time father and son had seen one another in 19 months.
“Yes, I have enjoyed the week,” Harry said. “I have always loved the U.K., and I always will love the U.K. It’s been good to reconnect with the causes I am passionate about. I have been able to spend some time with people that I have known for so long. It is hard to do it from far away.”

Though Harry wouldn’t speak about his father, he did say, poignantly, that—as Charles continues to receive cancer treatment, a diagnosis he announced in February 2024—for the next year, “the focus really has to be on my dad.” Of bringing his wife Meghan Markle and their kids to the U.K., Harry told the publication that “This week has definitely brought that closer.”
In the wide-ranging interview, Harry also added that while “parts of the British press want to believe that I am miserable, but I am not.”
“I am very happy with who I am and I like the life that I live,” he continued.

He mentioned advice from Meghan that Harry said “is the thing I always fall back on. Always”: how telling the truth “is the most efficient way to live.”
“She said ‘just stick to the truth,” he said, adding, “And if you think like that, who would be stupid enough to lie? It takes up too much time and effort.”
In life, he continued, “you cannot have reconciliation before you have truth,” and added that “It’s not stubbornness, it is having principles.”
“It is not about revenge, it is about accountability,” Harry said.

The outlet suggested to the Duke of Sussex that the reason Ukrainian people liked him so much on his recent visit was that he, in the words of The Guardian, “is quite Ukrainian in his attitude to life: he does his own thing, in his own way.”
“You know who else did that?” Harry said in response. “My mum,” referring, of course, to Princess Diana.
