Dragon Ball Daima is trash, according to Kazuhiko Torishima, a former editor of the late Akira Toriyama. Torishima is highly regarded for his work at Weekly Shōnen Jump, such as serving as Toriyama’s editor during Dragon Ball, but has come under fire numerous times for his controversial opinions.
Torishima spoke poorly of Toriyama’s final contribution to Dragon Ball on the latest episode of KosoKoso, dated Sept. 9, 2025, on YouTube. @/sandman_AP, a social media user who commonly shares and translates details regarding One Piece, revealed Torishima’s harsh words about Dragon Ball Daima on X (formerly Twitter). “Dragon Ball Daima was a trash anime,” Torishima said on his podcast co-hosted by him and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii.
Former Dragon Ball Editor Trashes Akira Toriyama’s Final Series: ‘Daima Was a Trash Anime’
Dragon Ball Daima followed Goku and his friends as they traveled the fantastical world of the Demon Realm as children, in the hopes of restoring their original forms after being cursed by a new, wicked ruler. The latest Dragon Ball anime concluded its 20-episode run on Feb. 28, 2025, the eve of the first anniversary of Toriyama’s passing.
Dragon Ball Daima was celebrated for its unique worldbuilding that only the great Toriyama could have come up with, as well as bringing back forgotten fan-favorite elements from the franchise, such as Super Saiyan 4 Goku. However, Daima was also criticized for its slow pacing, unresolved plot threads, and serious continuity issues with series like Dragon Ball Super.
Torishima’s mockery of Daima is far from the most controversial thing Shonen Jump’s former editor-in-chief has said in recent years. In July, Torishima trashed Attack on Titanfor failing to maintain its initial popularity, citing its complexity as a reason for limited long-term engagement. He further ridiculed AOT’s arguable drop in quality by saying, “Creating a character is a simple thing. Even a child can do it.”

Torishima’s treatment of Toriyama has also been criticized by fans, following new statements by the former Dragon Ball editor. Dragon Ball fans didn’t take kindly to a story Torishima shared about Toriyama’s poor health, where he downplayed the seriousness of Toriyama’s tendinitis. However, Torishima has also criticized Shonen Jump owner, Shueisha, for disrespecting Toriyama and his fans following the sudden announcement of his death in March 2024.
The Dragon Ball franchise, where it currently stands, is in a state of disarray following the end of Daima. There’s no announcement for more Dragon Ball anime, and the Dragon Ball Super manga, previously written by Toriyama with artwork by Toyotarou, resumed its hiatus following its special one-shot release in February. However, Dragon Ball remains active in new video game releases, such as the Daima DLC release for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra was also released for consoles, PC, and mobile devices.
Dragon Ball Daima is available to stream on Crunchyroll. Dragon Ball Super can be read digitally on the Viz Media and Manga Plus apps.
