Eighty years ago on 11 April 1945, American soldiers marched into Buchenwald concentration camp and liberated the people they found there, including 14-year-old Joe Szwarcberg.

Joe had endured years of starvation and forced labour before ultimately rebuilding a new life in Australia alongside other young survivors. Together they became known as the Buchenwald Boys.

In this special episode of Soul Search made with the Melbourne Holocaust Museum and ABC Education, we hear Joe’s story of endurance, friendship and survival.

This episode originally aired on 11 May 2025.
