A rumor is spreading online that Jordan Peele might direct an MCU movie, and the filmmaker’s production company has now responded to the speculation. Peele is best known for directing movies like Get Out, Us and Nope, and producing BlacKkKlansman, Candyman, Monkey Man, and Him.
If the latest rumors can be believed, Peele might add the MCU to his list of accomplishments, as Marvel Studios is reportedly interested in having him direct a future film in the superhero franchise.
The speculation has reached the point where it’s gotten the attention of Peele’s production company, Monkeypaw Productions, which reacted to @cosmic_marvel‘s X post about the rumor by simply leaving the side-eye emoji.
Multiple X users responded to the post with mixed reactions. Some said that Peele shouldn’t go anywhere near Marvel, while others provided ideas for which upcoming superhero film he could direct, with most suggesting the Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali.
This isn’t the first time Monkeypaw has used that emoji to react to a news report. As recently as December 1, the company’s X account reacted in the same way when responding to news that Peele would be producing the film Portrait of God with Sam Raimi.
For now, the report that Peele could direct a Marvel movie is still just speculation, but Monkeypaw’s use of the eyes emoji seems to indicate there’s some truth to the rumors.
If Peele wanted to debunk the rumors, he could have done so instead of leaving a cryptic emoji, but this latest update on X suggests a major announcement could be revealed soon.
If the rumors turn out to be true, this would not only be Peele’s first time directing a Marvel film, it would also be his first time helming a movie for Disney. All the movies he’s directed or produced have been distributed by Universal, Warner Bros., Focus Features, and Netflix.
He has been involved with the Mickey Mouse company before, though, as he’s voiced characters in Toy Story 4 and The Bob’s Burgers Movie, and appeared on The Muppets and Modern Family.
Directing a superhero movie for Marvel would be a huge departure for Peele, considering pretty much all the films he’s created have been in the horror and thriller genres.
Looking ahead to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Secret Wars, there are several movies in development, though most of them already have directors attached to the projects (like Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3 and Jake Schreier’s X-Men film).
However, Blade is currently rudderless after undergoing severe pre-production turmoil in recent years. Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were attached as directors at various points in the development process, but they have both left.
The film was originally set to be released in 2023, but multiple delays pushed it to 2025 before Disney decided to pull Blade from its calendar entirely, though Ali is still expected to play the titular character. Even though Peele hasn’t directed a superhero film, he is very familiar with horror, and Blade fits that genre.
If the reports that Marvel is interested in hiring Jordan Peele are true, it seems very likely that Blade is the movie they want him to direct. Fans will just have to wait for an official announcement (if one ever comes) or for more cryptic emojis from Monkeypaw.
