SAN ANTONIO – Jud Ashmore, a former KSAT 12 weatherman and a fixture in San Antonio media, died this week. He was 101 years old.
Ashmore’s death was announced on Wednesday.
A member of the Navy, Ashmore served in the Pacific during World War II, but he maintained a fascination with broadcasting throughout his decades-long career.
After a tour with the Air Force, Ashmore joined KSAT 12 News in 1968, which, at the time, had the call letters KONO-TV. KONO-TV became KSAT 12 in 1969.
While at KSAT, Ashmore also provided weather reports for KITE radio. In 1970, he left San Antonio for brief broadcasting stints in Indianapolis and San Francisco.
Ashmore returned to San Antonio in 1972 to provide weather reports for KENS 5. Two years later, he was reunited with popular radio personality Ricci Ware, who worked with Ashmore at KITE radio, for a new morning show on KBUC-AM.
In 1980, Ashmore decided to leave television to focus on his radio show. He stayed at KBUC until 1986, when he joined radio station WOAI-AM. He spent the next 16 years at WOAI until he stepped away in 2002.
Ashmore’s love of radio brought him back onto the airwaves in 2004 when he started working for KRNH-FM in Kerrville. In 2012, his broadcasting career came to an end.
Ashmore’s signature catchphrase on air was, “Hug somebody. It’ll make you feel good.” He was inducted into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame in 2017.
Ashmore later received statewide recognition when he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2024.
