Sydney Sweeney in a still from The Housemaid.Lionsgate

After two successful weeks at the box office, The Housemaid has notched a new win on its path to passing the coveted $100 million mark. The movie has already overtaken past erotic thrillers such as the classic Body Heat and the infamous Original Sin. And now, it has passed the lifetime global box office haul of Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman as a powerful CEO who begins a relationship with her new intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The Housemaid is directed by Paul Feig and based on a 2022 bestseller by Freida McFadden. The audience-approved movie stars Sydney Sweeney as a young housekeeper who discovers dark secrets about her employer, played by Amanda Seyfried.

Sweeney was coming off a highly publicized flop streak before The Housemaid, with films such as Christy and Eden both tanking commercially. The Housemaid is on course to become her first $100 million hit since Anyone But You, which debuted in 2023. Also starring Brandon Sklenar and Michele Morrone, The Housemaid has so far generated over $55 million domestically and nearly $65 million at the worldwide box office, putting it ahead of the $63 million that Babygirl concluded its box office run with in 2024. Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl earned mostly positive reviews but was met with a shrug from audiences. It’s now sitting at a “certified fresh” 76% critics’ score and a 48% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson memorably smolder together in Babygirl, with writer-director Halina Reijn’s clinical gaze keeping this sexually frank thriller more provocative than prurient.”

Lionsgate Seems To Be Getting Back on Its Feet

Babygirl was released at around the same time as Apple TV’s Presumed Innocent reboot, making 2024 a big year for erotic thrillers. Produced on a reported budget of $35 million, The Housemaid has proven to be a bigger crowd-pleaser, with a “certified fresh” 74% critics’ score and a “verified hot” 92% audience score on RT, where the consensus reads, “A sly throwback to the lurid thrillers that used to dominate multiplexes, The Housemaid cleans up nicely thanks to its wicked sense of fun and a delightfully unnerving performance from Amanda Seyfried.” The movie also marks a much-needed comeback for Lionsgate, which had an extremely poor 2024. With Now You See Me: Now You Don’t also doing solid business, it seems the studio is finding its feet again. You can watch The Housemaid in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
