Sale Price: $5.1 million

A two-year, $2.5 million gut renovation brought this rare,1960s modernist house in the Valley Oak neighborhood of Los Angeles into the present.

“The neighborhood is special and so is the home’s location in the neighborhood because it’s on the top of the hill,” said Alex Barad of Nourmand & Associates, who found a buyer for the home within weeks of listing it in the fall. “You look down on everything and get 270-degree views of the city.”

The seller added 1,000 square feet to the house, which was designed by architect Tim Campbell, remodeled the bathrooms and kitchen and knocked down walls so he could install large view-framing windows and sliding doors that link interior spaces to the outdoors.

It’s the details, the little things that you don’t expect, that define the house, Barad said.

“In the primary suite, if you push the mirror, it reveals a window and the views,” he said. “And in the media room/den, the sliding glass doors disappear, and you feel like you’re in the pool—it gets me every time.”

Neighborhood Notes

The private gated community of Valley Oak, which is also known as The Oaks of Los Feliz, contains only 28 houses.

“It’s like living outside of L.A. in a positive way,” Barad said. “It offers privacy, seclusion and mountainside views. It feels like you’re in Big Sur.”

He said that the community attracts a lot of celebrities, adding that the A-list residents have included Brad Pitt.
