A woman shared on Reddit that she refuses to go to her in-laws’ home anymore because whenever she visits, she always gets sick “due to all the allergens in the air,” including their pets and smoke
She said their drive home from her husband’s house often “consists of coughing, snot, and not being able to breathe very well” due to her allergies and asthma
Several readers suggested that she meet her in-laws outdoors or somewhere else that would not trigger her allergies
A woman is taking a stand after she says her in-laws’ home is full of allergens that keep making her sick.
The 24-year-old shared in a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum that she and her husband each take a turn spending “at least one night at each other’s houses” so they can see their families when they are home.
She said they make a habit of visiting “maybe once a month” since they live “a few hours away from our hometown.” However, she does not like visiting her husband’s house for a very specific reason.
“I am allergic to dogs and cats and have asthma,” she said. “My in-laws have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and his dad smokes in the house. Every time we visit, I get sick due to all the allergens in the air, even if I take allergy medicine and use my inhaler.”

She noted that before she and her husband got married she could “just drive home” when she “started feeling bad,” but she “can’t” now as they “take one car” to visit both their families. She also noted that while his parents have taken steps to try to limit the number of allergens in the home, it still doesn’t help.
“My in-laws have tried keeping the animals away from me, not letting the animals in the room we sleep in, cleaning before we come, buying an air purifier, but I know that allergens just don’t go away like that,” she explained.
“Our drive back [from their house] to where we live now consists of coughing, snot, and not being able to breathe very well,” she added. “Plus, I’m usually sick a day or two after we get back, and I sometimes miss work due to it.”
She noted that while she loves her husband and in-laws, she’s “so tired of being sick anytime we go home” and of “feeling rude” when she has to ask her husband if they could leave early or go back to her parents’ house.
She said that her asthma and allergies had been an issue in the past and she “did 3 years of allergy shots and did a breathing treatment for my asthma every 6 months from [the] 6th grade to 12th grade,” but she still has flare-ups. She then asked for help solving the issue because she doesn’t “know what to do anymore.”
In the comments, one person suggested that she have her in-laws come visit at her place and “leave the pets home,” while another person suggested that she go with her husband “for a meal” and then he stays overnight with his parents while she goes to stay with her parents and then she picks him up afterward.

Another person commented, “I’d just stay flexible. You get the car and when you’ve had your fill of that environment, you bail. I’d also suggest meeting at neutral locations like restaurants and parks.”
They added, “Invite everyone together so you don’t have to hop around. Some accommodations should be made for you visiting.”
Another person made a similar suggestion, saying “outside activities” were the way to go or meeting up at a restaurant if it was within her “budget.” They added, “That way you can spend quality time with your in-laws without compromising your health.”
