Claims Princess Kate and Prince William have been “cheapened” by a comparison to David and Victoria Beckham have been blasted today.
Royal fans have hit out at the criticism of a newspaper feature, which heaped praise on the Prince and Princess of Wales, suggesting they too believe the royal couple are popular and likeable. One social media user said: “As for the cheap shots at Catherine, Princess of Wales, she seems to be perfect as our next Queen.” Another posted: “Firmily respect Princess Catherine.” A third said: “Kate is the classiest kindest woman. She will make an incredible queen.”
Princess Kate and Prince William were, on Saturday, lauded for their “genuine relationship and a genuinely strong marriage,” akin to David and Victoria, who tied the knot in 1999. Praising the Prince and Princess’ “brand”, a well-placed source told The Times: “It reminds me a bit of dear old David and Victoria Beckham… I think the public can spot a genuine relationship and a genuinely strong marriage and two people who fit well together. How strong they are individually, but also as a couple. And I think that’s probably a great asset.”
But this praise was swiftly extinguished by a critic, whose rant has led to the backlash online in William and Kate’s defence today. However, the critic had sensationally said the comparison “cheapened” the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Journalist Amanda Platell wrote for the Daily Mail yesterday: “A strong marriage is undoubtedly important to the royals but do we really want to cheapen our future King and Queen by likening them to the Beckhams? Is it really how William and Kate want to be perceived in this unforgiving social media world?”
The 68-year-old columnist referenced the original feature, which was in a supplement on Saturday, that commended the future king and queen’s relationship and brand.

But royal fans quickly hit back at this, highlighting the Prince and Princess’ endless qualities, including many attributes displayed during 2025 and, in particular, a turbulent 2024. Mum-of-three Kate was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and, in January last year, she announced she was in remission.
Another fan posted: “It is amazing what Kate has achieved.” Someone else stated: “Personally, I think the comparison between the Beckhams & W&K [William and Kate] is spot on.”
There has been a suggestion that Kate and William will make a joint foreign visit this year, potentially to the US for the 250th anniversary of independence. Queen Elizabeth II visited the US in 1976 for America’s bicentennial.
