EXCLUSIVE: Hannah Simone (New Girl) and Iqbal Theba (Glee) are the newest additions to the cast of Super Troopers 3, the latest installment in a franchise from comedy troupe Broken Lizard and Searchlight Pictures.
Character details are under wraps, as is the plot of the threequel. Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar is directing from a script written by the group, with franchise veteran Richard Perello producing.
In addition to Chandrasekhar, Broken Lizard’s Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske all feature in the cast once again. Others on board include Brian Cox, Marisa Coughlan, Nat Faxon, Chace Crawford, and Andrew Dismukes.
Creative Executive Apolline Berty, VP of Production Richard Ruiz, and Creative Executive Daniel Yu are overseeing the project for Searchlight, reporting into Co-Heads of Film Production & Development DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas. Principal photography is currently underway.
Super Troopers is a cult hit comedy franchise, created by Broken Lizard, revolving around the shenanigans of a group of Vermont state troopers who are slacker pranksters first and foremost. The first film released through Fox Searchlight in 2001, after being acquired at Sundance Film Festival and going on to win the Audience Award at SXSW. Super Troopers 2 arrived 17 years later, and like the original film, was directed by Chandrasekhar, with the entire Broken Lizard crew writing and starring.
New Super Troopers cast member Simone recently starred in the ABC/Hulu series Not Dead Yet opposite Gina Rodriguez. Previously, she starred in Fox’s hit sitcom New Girl, opposite Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson, the ABC/20th pilot The Greatest American Hero, and the CBS comedy pilot Welcome to Georgia, which she also produced. Simone also created, executive produced, and starred in the ABC comedy pilot, Hannah. On the big screen, she’s appeared in Band Aid, directed by and starring Zoe Lister-Jones, as well as Killing Gunther alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. She is repped by UTA and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
Theba is best known for his SAG Award-winning role of Principle Figgins in Fox’s Glee, in which he starred for six seasons, as well as his role of Baba, the family patriarch, on Hulu’s Deli Boys. He will next be starring in and exec producing the indie Days with Dandekar, which starts shooting this fall. Recently, he also starred in Hurricanna opposite Holly Hunter and Mark Duplass, and in Fractured opposite Bruce Dern and Julia Ormond. He is repped by Stagecoach and Buchwald.
