Plimsoll Productions, the division of ITV Studios specializing in natural history documentaries and live events, has launched Plimsoll Immersive to develop experiential content for AR, VR and AI wearables.

Plimsoll Immersive’s content will incorporate original ideas as well as the company’s existing intellectual property into new experiences. Narratively and conceptually, the content will maintain Plimsoll’s natural history focus, immersing audiences in 2D and 3D environments via advanced technology.

Accordingly, Plimsoll’s creative director of natural history, Alex Ranken, will lead Plimsoll Immersive while continuing to make content for broadcast television. Over his past five years with Plimsoll, Ranken has directed and produced several series and specials, including Apple’s “Tiny World” and “The Wild Ones,” Disney+’s “A Real Bug’s Life” and ITV’s “A Year on Planet Earth.”

“Plimsoll has a reputation for visually rich, bold storytelling and editorial integrity,” Ranken said in a statement. “We are now applying those elements in this exciting new world, allowing audiences to be immersed in the story, which ultimately fosters deeper connections and engagement with the natural world.”

Mark Brownlow, head of natural history at Plimsoll, added, “Plimsoll has always looked to the future and Alex represents what comes next — a next-generation creator whose innovative storytelling and command of technology make him the perfect fit to grow this division and propel the company into an exciting new space. Alex will build on Plimsoll’s experience in 3D storytelling which has already seen the recent release of ‘Horse Power,’ a 3D IMAX film.”

“Horse Power” is a documentary about the relationships between people and horses around the globe, narrated by Josh Brolin. Other upcoming Plimsoll projects include “Surviving Pompeii with Tom Hiddleston,” “Force of Nature” and “Skyscraper Live,” which will livestream free soloist Alex Honnold’s ascent of Taipei 101 on Netflix.

Plimsoll is already producing multiple projects for Plimsoll Immersive, including an adaptation of a title yet to be announced.
