ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned seven bonus wins with two falls and three technical falls to roll to a dominant 43-3 rout over in-state rival Michigan State in its Big Ten Conference opener Friday night (Jan. 9) in front of 3,912 fans at Crisler Center. It was Michigan’s third 40-point performance of the season and the most lopsided win over MSU in the 104-year history of the series.
Redshirt senior Christian Tanefeu set the tone early, opening the dual with a third-period pin against Nick Corday in his season debut at 125 pounds. After trading takedowns in the first and second periods, Cordway started on top in the third, and Tanefeu made him pay, stacking him for the defensive fall at the 5:56 mark.
Graduate student Dylan Ragusin, ranked 26th at 141 pounds, earned a 9-3 decision against Jaden Crumpler in his first varsity appearance in a year after his season-ending injury in 2024-25. Ragusin recorded two takedowns, scoring from neutral danger on the edge of the mat early in the first period and a single leg in the third, and accumulated 1:19 of riding-time advantage.
Graduate student Lachlan McNeil, ranked 10th at 149 pounds, won by first-period injury default, then redshirt freshman Cameron Catrabone, ranked 14th, also ended his bout early, electrifying the Crisler crowd with a first-period fall — his team-best fifth this season — against Darius Marines at 157 pounds. He used a big snap to score the early takedown, then went wing-and-a-half from a crab ride for the pin at the 1:15 mark to give Michigan a 21-3 team lead going into intermission.
After the break, redshirt freshman Justin Gates posted a 9-1 major decision against DJ Shannon in his varsity debut up at 165 pounds, scoring takedowns in the first and third periods, a reversal in the second and accumulating 1:39 in riding-time advantage.
The Mantanonas scored back-to-back technical falls at 174 and 184 pounds to put the team win away for Michigan. Redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona, ranked 12th nationally, scored five takedowns and a reversal en route to a 20-5 win over Connor O’Neill in 5:49. Redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona, ranked eighth, made even quicker work of Ryan Boucher, recording five takedowns and a four-point leg turk to claim a 19-3 win in 3:21.
Redshirt freshman Hayden Walters, ranked 21st at 197 pounds, claimed the lone ranked win of the evening with a 7-2 decision against 29th-ranked Kael Wisler in his return from a brief hiatus. He scored a pair of takedowns — first a go behind, then a single leg — in quick succession in the second and nearly had another at the final buzzer. Graduate student Taye Ghadiali closed out the dual with the Wolverines’ third tech in four bouts, scoring six takedowns en route to a 20-4 win over Josh Terrill in 5:35. Ghadiali improved to 12-2 on the season with 10 bonus wins.
The Wolverines (5-2, 1-0 Big Ten) will travel to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers next Friday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. in the first of two duals on the weekend, streaming live on B1G+.
