The president just said that, for now, he sees the government of Acting President Delcy Rodríguez as an “ally” – a statement that is likely to raise eyebrows among large swathes of the Venezuelan diaspora.

It’s important to note that Trump has not, to date, framed the mission in Venezuela as “regime change”.

Instead, oil and drugs have very much been the administration’s public rationale for removing Maduro.

While he mentioned María Corina Machado’s visit to the White House next week, Trump did not in any way suggest that she would be in a position of leadership in Venezuela’s future, saying only she could play a role.

“I have to speak to her,” he added.

Notably, he also seemed open to Machado handing over her Nobel Prize – which he believes he should have been awarded.

“But I don’t care about that,” he said. “I care about saving lives.”
