Spare a thought for the A-list. While the world hibernates, here they are back on the red carpet under the hot glare of the spotlight, the flashbulbs and our scrutiny.
Just as the Met Gala occupies the first Monday in May, so the Golden Globes happens on an ungodly Sunday in January and stars tend to present with a radiant glow so befitting of the name, we can assume they didn’t go too large at New Year.
Take Jennifer Lawrence, for example, whose embroidered tulle Dior gown left very little to the imagination.

Or Jennifer Lopez, in whose skin-tight fishtailed bodystocking there was zero scope for festive excess.

Yet it was Zoë Kravitz who scooped the award for Most First-Week-Back-to-Work Outfit in a satin slip dress that looked suspiciously like her nightie, albeit one from Saint Laurent.

For the most part, however, the attendees seemed to be following the same January maxim as the rest of us: just wear black. Of course, for The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, it happens to come from Chanel: slash-necked, velvet-panelled and pinned with costume-jewellery brooches.

Likewise, Robin Wright was in a pared back cape-detailed black Ralph Lauren gown, while Jennifer Garner dripped with fringing and sparkle in the same shade.

Selena Gomez accessorised hers (also Chanel; a mere 323 hours to make, we are told) with a voluminous feather trim and — like Edebiri — Old Hollywood-inspired hair.

Even Timothée Chalamet, whose Marty Supreme premiere wardrobe has been eye-scorching so far, played it safe (though streetwise) in a black suit and work boots.

Wicked’s Ariana Grande left the themed Oz-play behind her, arriving in a bustled black Vivienne Westwood.

Never-a-foot-wrong Julia Roberts wore a deep V-necked style that was all the more chic for looking like something she owned already rather than borrowed for the night.

The up-and-coming Brits in attendance worked from a similar linesheet, although with more gothy quirk: Aimee Lou Wood, of White Lotus fame, wore a bodiced and full-skirted Vivienne Westwood dress, while Adolescence’s Erin Doherty sported a pin-tucked peplum look.

Mia Goth wore a halterneck satin number, beaded at the neckline, by Dior which spoke of designer Jonathan Anderson’s skill for giving classic elegance a modern spin.

There is such a thing as too much goth, however: the Wednesday star Jenna Ortega seemed to have stayed in Addams Family character in a black fringed number, cut dramatically at the sides.

Jacob Elordi’s boxily cut black suit was a hip alternative to the usual top-heavy macho silhouette but it veered close to funeral-director garb.

Those who weren’t in black were in — drumroll — white: Amanda Seyfried channelled the golden age of silver-screen sirens in flawless Versace couture.

Emily Blunt was in white too — an asymmetrical caped style from Louis Vuitton which seemed to trumpet her fashion credentials before her role in the Devil Wears Prada sequel out this year.

Clare Danes out shone in bright white, while Emma Stone chose a creamy crop top and skirt — also by Louis Vuitton.

Others went down the glitzy route: both Elle and Dakota Fanning were in silvery and bread-encrusted spray-on numbers — the former in one of the first red-carpet looks from Gucci’s newly installed designer, Demna, and the latter wearing another Westwood look.

Minnie Driver arrived in a silver sequin-banded strapless column and Kate Hudson was in a strung silver halterneck style.

Tessa Thompson, star of Hedda, chose a similar shape but in Oscars gold.

Teyana Taylor, from One Battle After Another, was in a carefully cut-away black gown that featured a wry bejewelled thong detail at the back.

Colour was thin on the ground, echoing the minimalist mood pervading fashion more widely right now. Yet Rose Byrne stood out in striking green Chanel, while Parker Posey hammed things up in frills and furbelows from Valentino.

Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley — in sakura print baby-blue Dior silk — looked gorgeously fresh (and not just because she seemed genuinely excited to be there) while Amal Clooney and Alicia Silverstone were wrapped in Special K red.

Priyanka Chopra swerved black but only just, in navy tulip-line Dior, a shade picked up in lace by Kathy Bates too.

Of the men, The White Lotus’s Patrick Schwarzenegger looked sharp in a broad-lapelled black tux, while Colman Domingo’s featured a motif of silvered ivy leaves.

Glen Powell veered the right side of peacock in dark blue velvet and the rapper Snoop Dogg might well have coined a new sartorialism in what seemed to be a triple-breasted jacket, bisected by a punchy slice of crimson.
