Warning! Warning! Spoilers ahead for Uncanny X-Men #21!

Wolverine has a new surrogate son in X-Men lore. Since his introduction, the young mutant known as Ransom has become increasingly close to Logan. Now, fans are wondering if he is officially the newest member of Wolverine’s extended family, or if this is set up for a tragic turn of events foreshadowed earlier in Uncanny X-Men’s current run.

Uncanny X-Men #21 is written by Gail Simone, with art by Luciano Vecchio. The preview for the issue features a flashback to Ransom’s childhood, while in the present, he confronts his biological father alongside his new mentor and father-figure, Wolverine.

Ransom has quickly become an X-Men fan-favorite, thanks in part to his dynamic with Wolverine.

X-Men has been steadily building up Logan’s relationship with Ransom, aka Valentin Correra, who is a member of the group of new mutants dubbed “the Outsiders,” introduced at the start of this volume of Uncanny X-Men. The series established the parallels in temperament and combat prowess early, and continues to explore these in this latest issue.

Uncanny X-Men #21 is also the greatest insight, so far, into Ransom’s traumatic past. Readers already knew that the fledgling hero’s codename was the result of a kidnapping attempt gone awry in his past; the flashback in this issue provides greater context to this moment, including confirming Ransom took his costume from his kidnapper.

The preview for Uncanny X-Men #21 ends on the precipice of a climactic action scene, if Ransom and Logan can’t talk their way out of their current predicament. Whatever happens, it should prove to be the next step in their increasingly father-son dynamic, yet X-Men fans are worried Logan is being set up for a major betrayal.

When Uncanny X-Men introduced the Outsiders, it also warned that one of them was, in fact, not a young mutant, or potential hero at all, but rather the dark primordial antagonist known as the Endling in disguise. The series has left this plot thread dangling, and the longer it does, the more anticipation builds for the climactic reveal.

Ransom’s emotional proximity to Wolverine, unfortunately, makes him a prime candidate for the Endling. So far, Uncanny X-Men has invested the most time in developing his character, and his positive reception by fans means it would hit them where it hurts as much as Wolverine. In other words, Ransom could be X-Men’s next great hero, or merely a puppet for a nefarious villain.

Uncanny X-Men #21 will be available September 17, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
