CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois guard Keaton Wagler (Shawnee, Kansas) is Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Wagler earns the award for the second straight week, and third time this season.
Keaton Wagler Highlights (Jan. 5-11)
• Led the Illini to two wins last week, averaging a team-leading 18 points with six rebounds and 3.5 assists
• Game-high 19 points with five rebounds and four assists as Illinois earned a Quad 1 win at No. 19 Iowa
• Game-high 17 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a home win over Rutgers
• Shot 47.6% from the field, including 45.5% from 3-point range, and 84.6% from the free throw line
• Extended his double figures scoring streak to eight straight games, which includes all five games in Big Ten play
This marks the fifth time in nine selections this season that an Illini has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Prior to Wagler’s three accolades, teammate David Mirkovic twice earned the award.
Winners of five straight, Wagler and the No. 13 Fighting Illini are next in action Wednesday night at Northwestern (7:30 p.m. CT, BTN).
