Though he didn’t win his category at Sunday’s Golden Globes, Leonardo DiCaprio still struck gold with a viral moment that saw him enthusiastically speaking to an off-camera attendee during a commercial break. Now, the star on the other end of the widely shared clip has come forward, confirming that she was the one the Oscar-winning icon spoke to in the footage.
“He was talking to me, yes,” DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another costar — and Golden Globe-winning actress — Teyana Taylor revealed in a new interview with Access Hollywood (below).
The 35-year-old admitted that she was “so blacked out from that day” and the excitement surrounding it “that I want to say we might’ve been talking about KPop Demon Hunters,” but she isn’t quite sure.
Following the wide circulation of the clip, many lip-reading social media users noted that DiCaprio appeared to mouth the words “the KPop thing” to whoever he spoke to, leading many to believe the subject of his conversation was Ejae’s emotional Best Original Song victory for the KPop Demon Hunters tune “Golden.”
Taylor told Access Hollywood that she “was so happy when they won because my kids love KPop Demon Hunters, so I was over there just jamming,” adding that she remembered DiCaprio “caught me jamming,” which led to the now-viral video clip of the resulting conversation.
“I just don’t remember what he was saying, I don’t even think I really even heard what he was saying, I probably was just laughing and kiki’ing back and had no clue what he was saying,” Taylor added.
The All’s Fair star said that she, too, saw the lip-reading analysis of the moment online, which bolstered her recollection that DiCaprio spoke to her about the Netflix animated movie.
“I didn’t know that that moment was being captured,” Taylor said.
She then said that the energy on display in the footage tracked with what she knows about DiCaprio’s personality, having met him at Diana Ross’ birthday party years before filming Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar-bound hit One Battle After Another.
Taylor recalled meeting each other and “chewing gum” in flamboyant fashion. “He’s a good time,” she stressed. “That’s really my family.”
Taylor’s supporting performance as the former romantic partner of DiCaprio’s character — and the mother to their daughter (fellow Globe nominee Chase Infiniti) — won the Golden Globe on Sunday, with the actress making headlines for her emotional acceptance speech.
