The Modern Language Association (MLA) approved a resolution defining the war in Gaza as a “U.S.-sponsored genocide” and claiming that accusations of antisemitism are being used as a tool to silence campus protests. The organization, considered the world’s leading academic body in literature and languages and known for establishing academic writing and citation standards, passed the resolution at its delegate assembly in Toronto. In response, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) demanded that the association’s leadership veto the move. In a letter sent by the organization, it stated that the resolution exceeds the association’s professional mandate, dismisses the rise in hate crimes against Jews, and excludes Zionist scholars who are forced to hide their identity.
