The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2, up to and including Episode 5, “Back To The Suture.” You have been warned!

This season on Peacemaker, the first five episodes have done some heavy lifting to establish an alternate dimension where Chris Smith’s (John Cena) older brother Keith wasn’t murdered, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) also survived the events of The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker is a beloved hero of the people. There are plenty of indications that Smith’s “best dimension ever” isn’t everything it appears to be on the surface, though none of us know the specifics, because Episodes 6, 7 and 8 of Season 2 were kept from press and critics, and are being held under lock and key until they air.

Now that you’ve seen how Episode 5, titled “Back to the Suture,” ended, let’s learn how a crucial member of the Peacemaker cast teased the final arc of the season.

A Dark Secret About Peacemaker’s ‘Best Dimension Ever’ Is Hiding in Plain Sight

In Season 2, Peacemaker discovers an idyllic reality where he has everything he wants, but a horrible truth about this world hides in the background.

Sol Rodriguez Reveals A Major Secret

Some people reading this might have known this was coming, as it’s a canon fact from DC Comics, but Sol Rodriguez’s character, Sasha Bordeaux, was revealed to be a partial cyborg in Episode 5 of Peacemaker. This is the case in the comics, but had not been hinted at in Peacemaker until this most recent episode, when Bordeaux had a bead on Chris Smith and used her cybernetic eyeball to plan the kill shot… until Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) intervened.

Speaking to CBR exclusively about the Bordeaux reveal, Rodriguez said:

I saw it in the comics, but I wanted to put my expectations low. Because it’s a new version (of this character) and it’s what James was going to write. So I didn’t know what he was going to write. I was very excited that she had that in the comics, but I didn’t know if it was going to be a thing in the show. Then, when I read the fifth episode, and I saw that her eye — you can see that cyborg side of her? I got so excited! To get to play a metahuman, you know, it’s not an everyday thing and it’s not a role that comes easy. I was very excited to be able to be a cyborg.

The events of the season are starting to come to a head in Episode 5. As the episode begins, Harcourt has been ordered to lure Smith into a trap, but she maneuvers as much as she can behind the scenes to prevent A.R.G.U.S. from fully apprehending him. You can sense some of this frustration in Bordeaux, and even in Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), who does manage to beat some daylight into Peacemaker as part of his mission of vengeance.

James Gunn Wrote 1 Thing into Peacemaker As An Afterthought – It’s Now a Huge Part of The DCU

There’s an element from Peacemaker Season 1 that impacted Superman, as well as the show’s second season.

The physicality of Sasha Bordeaux was a big part of the reason why Rodriguez believed she’d never get the opportunity to play in a superhero sandbox. I mention to her that there are some very funny moments in Episode 5 where her character is framed in such a way that emphasizes the actress’s petite frame, whether she’s standing next to John Cena, or staring Jennifer Holland in the face.

“When they put me next to Steve Agee, I’m 5’2, he’s 6’7. Like, don’t do that to me!” the actress joked switch CBR. “That’s another reason why I never thought I was going to be able to do a role like this that required that presence, that strength. Because I was like, ‘Who’s going to believe I can kick ass?’ But you know what? If you’re a cyborg, you can be small and still kick ass.”

‘It’s A Movie Made In Three Parts’

James Gunn has held the last three episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 very close to his vest. During the world premiere in New York City, he mentioned on the red carpet that he hasn’t even let anyone in his personal circle see the episodes, for fear of spoilers getting out. But he did claim that the last three episodes (of which he directed episodes 6 and 8) are some of the most favorite stuff he has ever done.

I asked Sol Rodriguez what she could tease about these episodes that no one is allowed to see, and she told CBR:

It’s a movie made in three parts. It’s big, big episodes. Big everything. Everything becomes crazy. Everyone starts to intertwine, and they’re very — that’s why they’re not sending them to you. They’re very big episodes. I hope you enjoy them once they come out.

She also elaborated on the different experience that came with having Gunn as her director for episodes 6 and 8, telling CBR, “He knows what he wants. He wrote this. Nobody’s going to tell him otherwise. He has his vision, and he just tells you what he wants and we do it, and it’s great having him directing. It was one of my favorite days on set, when he’s there. He’s also very fun. He’s telling jokes on his mic, laughing his ass off. It’s just so fun.”

Even though I feel like this season is heading for some devastation. Because I don’t believe that the alternate universe is rose-colored and peachy keen. I don’t think Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick) is a good man. And I think James Gunn like to hurt John Cena. And, by extension, us.

Peacemaker Episode 6 airs Thursday, Sept. 25, and it all builds to the finale, set to air on HBO Max on October 9.
