At only 5.6mm thick, the iPhone Air is the result of Apple’s superior engineering and ambition to make the device as thin and as powerful as possible. Unfortunately, even the company’s prowess has a limit, as the sleek flagship only shipped with a single rear camera coupled with a disappointingly low battery capacity. With immense internal space constraints to address, a rumor claims that the iPhone Air 2 will ship with a second primary camera, but for that to happen, Apple will have to incorporate a customized version of Face ID that’s much thinner than the current iteration.
Secondary camera to be an ultrawide-angle unit, with the iPhone Air 2 predicted to offer a 48MP resolution duo
On Weibo, Momentary Digital states that the second camera on the iPhone Air 2 will be present in a horizontal arrangement, meaning that the optics unit will likely be placed next to the wide-angle camera. However, to achieve this feat, Apple will be forced to employ a customized version of Face ID that’s much thinner. An unnamed supplier is supposedly working with Apple to develop this component, with the company having plenty of time to achieve its desired goal, given that the iPhone Air 2 isn’t expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 series this year.
Instead, a previous report has stated that the iPhone Air 2 may launch in Spring 2027. Despite the iPhone Air’s production volume lowered by one million units due to virtually no demand, Apple appears adamant about making this form factor a standard, which is why there haven’t been any concrete or consistent reports that the iPhone Air 2 will receive the axe. Instead, the immediate successor is said to be in its normal testing phase, with the technology giant evaluating a second 48MP ultrawide-angle camera to add to its specifications.
A separate report mentioned that the iPhone Air 2 could also have telephoto capabilities, but the space constraints may prevent Apple from adding a tetraprism periscope zoom lens to the hardware. The thinner version of Face ID is also rumored to make its way to Apple’s MacBook, but Momentary Digital wasn’t too keen on divulging the key details, so we’ll have to wait and find out which portable Mac will be treated to this technology.
We also cannot confirm if this customized variation of Face ID will make its way to the iPhone 18 series, but it could be possible, considering that Apple is rumored to shrink the Dynamic Island’s size by 35 percent.
