Croatia has secured a place in the final of one of Europe’s most prestigious architecture prizes, with Gruž Market shortlisted for the **2026 **EU Mies Award****.

Designed by the Dubrovnik-based studio ARP Veljačić-Peračić, led by architects Miranda Veljačić and Dinko Peračić, the Gruž Market has advanced from an initial shortlist of 40 projects to the final seven in the contemporary architecture category for 2026. The remaining finalists include three projects from France and one each from Belgium, Spain and Slovenia.

In its assessment, the jury described the seven finalist projects as “exemplary contributions to the future of European architecture,” noting their ability to respond to local conditions while addressing broader social challenges. The jury praised the projects for creating inclusive, high-quality spaces for living, learning and community life, balancing innovation with sensitivity to their surroundings.

Originally conceived as a simple canopy to protect vendors from sun and rain, the Gruž Market project evolved into a comprehensive urban renewal. The reconstruction restored visual integrity to the adjacent historic summer residence, revitalised surrounding public spaces, and redefined the market as a coherent public building that connects areas inside and outside Dubrovnik’s historic walls.

Established in 1988 in Barcelona by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in partnership with the European Union, the EU Mies van der Rohe Award is widely regarded as one of the highest distinctions in contemporary European architecture.
