Summary
GOG is actively pursuing Linux support and calls it the “next frontier” for PC gaming.
GOG has begun recruiting a Senior Engineer to port its Galaxy client to native Linux.
No ETA yet, but the team loves Linux and says Linux support will appear on GOG.
A little while ago, we got some excellent news from the people over at Good Old Games (GOG). After one of the co-founders of GOG managed to bring the GOG website back from its former owners, CD Projekt Red, a job posting for the service claimed that GOG saw Linux as the “next frontier” of PC gaming, and would be taking it more seriously moving forward.
You’d be forgiven for believing that, while GOG definitely has plans to support Linux gaming, not much has actually happened. After all, it’s bringing on a new engineer to handle just that. Well, it turns out that GOG isn’t sitting around, as it’s already working on Linux integrations, even if it’s not sure how long it’ll take just yet.

GOG is already going full steam ahead on Linux
And it has a lot of internal love for the OS

As spotted by PC Guide, the team over at GOG recently held an AMA over on the GOG subreddit. If you’ve never heard of them before, an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread involves a question-taker making a post where they say who they are and what they do, and people can pose questions to them. It’s often done for celebrities to take questions from internet pundits, but it’s also a nice advertising tool for music, games, and art.
People began to flock to the GOG AMA to ask the team questions about where GOG is going and what they’re working on. As you might imagine, some people were curious about the recent declaration of treating Linux as the next major frontier in gaming. One person asked when GOG believes it can get a native Linux client done, to which the team replied:
1. With the recent job posting for a developer to port Galaxy to Linux, is there an estimated time of when it’ll be available?
The process is started, but it’s too early to give any ETA.
Someone else asked about GOG’s Linux plans and how it’d be implemented. This one garnered a longer response:
We’re at a very early stage right now, but we of course see the rising popularity and importance of this OS for gamers and agree on its value. We’ve started the recruitment process for a Senior Engineer who would help handle it. When it comes to specifics, we can’t share much at the moment. Nonetheless, the work has started, and this will appear on GOG one day. That much we can say. Plus, personally, I’m a big fan of Linux 🙂 It’s a serious topic for us, where we’ll put our efforts.
It’s cool to not only see GOG recognise Linux as rising in popularity among gamers, but also have a love for FOSS operating systems themselves. We’ll just have to wait and see what the company has planned for its Galaxy client in the future.
