The popular Carlingford Lough Greenway in north Louth has been closed temporarily due to coastal erosion following the recent storm.

Walkers and cyclists who ventured out on the Greenway earlier today were dismayed to see that it has been undermined by the heavy seas of recent days.

The areas closest to starting point near the Marina are worse affected, with the embankment on the coastal side undermined in a number of places. One section of fencing has collapsed into the sea and it also appears that the path itself has been undermined by the waves.

Coastal erosion was also observed at a number of places further along the Greenway towards Omeath.

Louth County Council has posted on social media that “For public safety, the Greenway will be temporarily closed while inspections are carried out.”

The 6.2km section of Greenway, which was opened 2014, links Carlingford and Omeath, It forms part of a cross-border Greenway running all the way through Newry to Portadown.

The Louth coast took a severe battering in recent storms. Parts of the road at Ballagan/Ballynamoney also on the Cooley peninsula which were badly damaged during Storm Chantra, were further undermined by debris washed inland earlier this week.

Crews from Louth County Council made the road, which had just been repaired, passable, but motorists are warned to proceed with caution.
