Charli XCX is falling deeper and deeper into her movie star career, and now it’s finally erupted in her first leading role that’s not playing herself. In the first trailer for ERUPCJA, she stars as Bethany, a woman who seems unsure of her upcoming engagement to her boyfriend, Rob (Will Madden), while on vacation in Poland. But when a volcano erupts and their flight home is canceled, Bethany reconnects with her childhood friend Nel (Lena Góra), who, every time they get together, “a volcano erupts,” metaphorically speaking. “We like to joke that we’re making it happen,” Bethany says. “What’s the joke? Volcanoes kill people,” a friend (Jeremy O. Harris) points out. But their antics seem more than just besties cruising around town, there’s a palpable romantic tension in the air, and the trailer is possibly teasing an actual explosion in Bethany’s relationship as Rob gets iced out more and more.
Directed by Pete Ohs, ERUPCJA arrives in Los Angeles and New York on April 17.
