A person has been detained for questioning in connection with the apparent abduction of Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office said late Tuesday.
The person, who was not named, was detained during a traffic stop south of Tucson, Ariz., earlier in the day, according to the sheriff’s department.
“The subject is currently being questioned in the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a statement. “Additional information will be released as it comes available.”
The development came hours after the FBI released new images of “an armed individual” taken from the doorbell camera of Nancy Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills just north of Tucson, Ariz., on the morning of the 84-year-old’s disappearance. It was not immediately clear whether the person detained for questioning was the same person seen in the footage.
FBI Director Kash Patel shared photos and videos on social media of a person wearing a ski mask and gloves who appeared “to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door.” Patel said that law enforcement uncovered these “previously inaccessible new images” from a video that was recovered from “residual data located in backend systems.”
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show cohost Savannah Guthrie, was last seen around 9:45 p.m. on Jan. 31, when she was dropped off at her home by family members after dinner, police said. She was reported missing around noon the next day after she did not show up at a friend’s house to watch an online church service.
A ransom note demanding $6 million in bitcoin was sent to several news outlets last week. Law enforcement has not verified the authenticity of the note, which included a deadline of 5 p.m. on Monday.
The FBI said late Monday that it was not aware of any contact “between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers, nor have we identified a suspect or person of interest in this case.”
Savannah Guthrie released a new Instagram video on Monday night, pleading with followers for their help as the agonizing search for her mother entered its second week.
“We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help,” she concluded.
