Britney Spears has sold her music catalogue, according to the New York Times. That catalogue contains dozens of genre-defining pop hits — like “Oops! … I Did It Again,” “Stronger,” “Toxic,” and “Piece of Me” — all of which make up the soundtrack of our collective millennial childhood. Per the Times, Primary Wave, a music and marketing company that specializes in catalogue acquisitions, bought Spears’s share of the music rights. The exact sale price and terms of the deal are still unknown, though a source described the agreement to TMZ as a “landmark deal” that took place at the end of December.
Spears joins a growing list of artists selling off the rights to their music for big pay days. In 2023, Justin Bieber sold his catalogue and the rights to his publishing and artist royalties to Hipgnosis for an estimated $200 million. A source told TMZ that Spears’s payout was likely in the neighborhood of Bieber’s deal. Bruce Springsteen, Shakira, Stevie Nicks, and Sting have all followed suit.
It’s unclear what exactly all of this means for Spears, but it sounds like she’s excited to cash out. Sources say that the singer is, as the gossip rag put it, “happy with the sale and has been celebrating by spending time with her kids.” Maybe she was actually getting business advice that one time she hung out with the Kardashians.
