An abandoned cafe and truck park could be demolished and redeveloped under new plans.

A developer wants to knock down the former cafe off Newmarket Road in Little Abington to create a commercial building to support the life science industry.

In its application to South Cambridgeshire District Council, Realis Cambridge PropCo Ltd said the site has been “abandoned since 2018” and was now “derelict”.

The plans said: “Due to the unstable nature of the existing brick building on site, retention and retrofit is not viable for the intended use of the development.

“Instead, we believe that a replacement building, with fit-for-purpose and modern sustainability credentials will provide for an adaptable, useful and long-term solution.”

The proposed 14.5-metre building will offer a “flexible space” to support the “wider network of life science, tech and industrial activity” in the area, the developers say.

It would be built as an “open shell space” for future occupiers, with 27 car parking spaces, 20 per cent of which would have electric charging from day one.

Cycle parking would meet the council’s required standards.

The council will determine the application.
