Tarzan and Tanya were born into a traveling circus and were kept in a cage barely bigger than a queen-sized mattress. They had never even touched grass. Life for them probably would have been unbearable, but luckily they had each other.

Every day, Tarzan would comfort Tanya and groom her, and in turn, she would protect him from any threats. They depended on each other and found joy despite their incredibly hard life.

When having circus animals became illegal in Guatemala, where the two lions were being kept, Animal Defenders International convinced the circus to surrender Tarzan and Tanya to their sanctuary in South Africa. Finally, the lion couple would be free.

Both of the lions were strangely calm as their rescuers prepared to transport them to safety, almost like they knew everyone was there to help. The rescuers gave them the medical care they so desperately needed before loading them up for the 27-hour journey to the sanctuary. During the flight, the two lions had to be in separate crates — but they could still see each other, and they kept their eyes on each other the entire time.

When they finally reached South Africa, the rescuers opened Tarzan’s crate first, but he refused to get out. He could see Tanya still in her crate and kept his eyes on her instead, refusing to start his new life without her. Once Tanya had been released into the enclosure, Tarzan eagerly joined her, and their reunion was so beautiful.

The pair immediately began nuzzling each other and running around their new home together. They had never gotten the chance to put their paws on grass before, and now they were doing it side by side.

Tanya and Tarzan are thriving in their new home. They’ve been through so much, but now they can enjoy their beautiful new life together.
