Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar will represent Israel at US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace summit in Washington on Thursday, a source familiar with the matter told The Jerusalem Post.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially accepted the US president’s invitation to join the Board of Peace in January. At the time, the prime minister signed a letter “on behalf of Israel” to “refer to the charter of the Board of Peace.”
“By this communication, I confirm that the said signature is definitive,” the letter signed by Netanyahu read, adding that this constituted “the consent of the State of Israel to be bound by the charter.”
This past Wednesday, Netanyahu made Israel’s membership on the Board of Peace official during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Blair House in Washington.
The Board of Peace initiative was originally designed with the intent of bringing the war in Gaza to a close, but Trump later said that it would resolve conflicts globally.
Before it was confirmed that Sa’ar would represent Israel at the conference, the Prime Minister’s Office noted that Netanyahu would not be in the US this coming week.
On Thursday, the PMO said that Netanyahu would participate remotely in the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee AIPAC conference and therefore would not be traveling to the US.
