HP has announced the FilmScan 7”, a user-friendly film scanner designed to convert negatives and slides into digital images without requiring a computer. The standalone device can scan film and save files directly to a memory card, simplifying the digitization process for home users.

The scanner features a large 7-inch touchscreen interface and built-in editing tools that allow users to process negatives into JPEG files directly on the device. HP positions the FilmScan 7” as an accessible way to preserve film photographs and easily share them online.

Large Touchscreen and Simplified Workflow

The FilmScan 7” is built around a tilting 7-inch touchscreen display that allows quick navigation, live previews, and editing. The adjustable screen improves viewing comfort during scanning and streamlines the workflow by eliminating the need for external software.

A previous FilmScan model featured a smaller 5-inch screen and lacked a tilting mechanism, making the new version notably easier to operate.

Supported Film Formats and Scanning Features

The scanner supports multiple film formats, including 135 (35mm), 110, and 126 film strips, as well as 35mm slides mounted in 50mm frames. A quick-feed loading tray allows continuous scanning of longer film strips with minimal handling.

Processed images are saved as 22-megapixel JPEG files, suitable for archiving and larger reprints. Files can be stored on an SD card or transferred to a computer via USB.

The FilmScan 7” also includes an HDMI output that can be used for slideshows, digital picture-frame display, or screen mirroring to a larger monitor while controls remain on the built-in touchscreen.

Users can apply adjustments directly during scanning, including brightness, contrast, and color tuning. The scanner also features automatic cropping with a manual override option for more precise framing.

By enabling scanning and editing in one device, the FilmScan 7” offers a convenient home alternative to lab scanning services and allows photographers to rescan negatives as needed.
