The Warriors just got bad news on the latest Stephen Curry injury update and return timeline, but Kristaps Porzingis is ready for his debut.
The Golden State Warriors have been without franchise star Stephen Curry for a few weeks, as he’s been out with a knee injury, and the latest update on the 37-year-old signals they’ll be without him for a bit longer.
Speaking on NBA Today, ESPN insider Shams Charania offered up a new Curry injury update after he underwent an MRI yesterday.
“I‘m told an MRI in the last 24 hours on Stephen Curry showed no structural issue in his right knee,” Charania said. “But he is dealing with persistent swelling and pain in that knee. The team is describing it as ‘Runner’s Knee‘ as the injury.”
Reporting for NBA Today on the tests on Golden State star Stephen Curry’s ailing knee:
Curry did not play in the All-Star Game due to the knee injury, and as of right now, the superstar has no timeline for a return for the Warriors.
Stephen Curry Injury Update
Previously, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr told reporters that Curry wouldn’t practice with the team, and he was eventually ruled out for their upcoming contest against the Boston Celtics. He then said the team was discussing whether an MRI was the right next move, and according to Charania, while there is no structural damage to his knee, the injury is still keeping him sidelined for the time being.
“He deals with pain and swelling, and so both the Warriors and Curry need all of that to subside before he can try to start to play again, and it’s uncertain whether that will be days or weeks away,” Charania added.
Anthony Slater of ESPN reported that Curry’s clean MRI is a good sign, but he has been dealing with the knee injury for over a month and remains out for the time being.
The latest on Steph Curry’s persistent knee injury with @ShamsCharania. Another MRI came back clean, ruling out anything structural, but Curry’s been dealing with this pain and swelling for nearly a month. Started after a workout on Jan. 24.
“There’s no underlying structural issue that is of graver concern, but this is something he’s been dealing with for over a month now. It originally popped up in Minnesota during a workout the day that game (vs. Timberwolves) got postponed,” Slater said. “He played through it a little bit…And then it started to bother him again.”
Slater added that the news of Curry’s injury update clouds what was expected to be a celebrated night, as it was previously announced that trade deadline acquisition Kristaps Porzingis would make his debut against the Celtics.
Curry is at risk of missing out on the NBA’s end-of-season awards, which require a 65-game threshold to be hit by all players eligible for All-NBA, MVP, and other honors. The three-point shooting leader has missed 16 games for the Warriors so far this season, and missing two more would put him out of contention for the end-of-season awards.
Porzingis Injury Update, Set To Make Warriors Debut
As mentioned, Porzingis is expected to make his debut for Golden State on Thursday night as they host Boston in the first game back from the All-Star break.
At the time of trading for the big man, Porzingis was dealing with a lingering Achilles injury, and played in only 17 games for the Atlanta Hawks through the first two-thirds of the season.
However, as Slater previously reported, despite the team listing Porzingis as questionable, the player himself said that he expects to suit up against his former team in his Warriors debut.
Kristaps Porzingis said he’s “back at it” tomorrow vs Celtics. Team listing him as questionable so he didn’t want to say for certain, but it’s clear he plans to make his Warriors debut.
“Feeling good. Ready to go.”
“Feeling good. Ready to go,” Porzingis said the day before the game.
As it relates to his fit on Golden State, the Bay Area team is in desperate need of some added rim-protection and shooting, both of which Porzingis offers.
“You don’t have to change a whole lot,” Kerr said about slotting Porzingis in the lineup. “The biggest difference is that he provides his post-ups. He’s a pretty good post-up player, especially against switches. You throw him the ball at the foul line, the elbows, even the low block, he can score in those spots.”
While Curry is still out, with an uncertain return timeline, Porzingis will make his debut as the Warriors hope to make a push for the playoffs in the final third of the 2025-26 NBA regular season.
