Death In Paradise: Preview clip for episode four

Death In Paradise have given fans a first look at the new episode – as one of the team struggles with a very personal case. The BBC detective drama is back on this evening (Friday) after a schedule change last week.

A synopsis for the episode reads: “The team investigate when an elderly parishioner from Seb’s church is killed by a large cross in what seems like a tragic accident, but Mervin suspects foul play. Seb struggles to keep his emotions out of a highly personal case and Mervin redoubles his efforts to settle into life on the island.”

In the clip, Mervin is struggling to bond with the residents of Saint Marie and suggests to Catherine that they should install a darts board at her bar in order to drum up some community.

However, Catherine is less than keen about the idea of her having her Caribbean bar turned into a typical British sports bar. In the end, Mervin is forced to keep the dart board, unable to sway her plans.

Mervin is only staying on the island for his brother Solomon – but could this end badly now that Solomon has decided its better if they keep their distances given that he’s a police officer.

Speaking about the discovery, Don said of his character: “It was a great emotional cliffhanger because at any moment in that series Mervin could have just said ‘that’s it, I’ve done my time’, and now he literally can’t go.

“The one thing he was in pursuit of at the start of this series was family and then to throw that in at the end, that he’s not alone… He’s powerless to resist that and he has to stay now for the next chapter in his family quest, because he thought he had no family. So how can he turn his back on that?”

With things not looking great for Solomon and Mervin’s relationship, will he stay – or will he decide he’s had enough of Saint Marie?

“I think phrases like ‘two peas in a pod’, do not apply… They couldn’t be more opposite. There’s Mervin and then there’s this guy who is on the opposite side of the tracks, potentially the opposite side of the law too…” he said.

“There’s just something that Mervin can’t quite put his finger on. He’s having to accept that whatever his notions were about what Solomon could be like, it might not be like that. Daniel Ward plays the character brilliantly.”
