A few years ago, an animal lover named Simon Curtis got hungry in the middle of the night and decided to make himself a salad. Curtis pulled a plastic container of romaine lettuce out of the fridge and was about to open it up when he noticed something strange inside the box.
“I saw this green blob,” Curtis said in a video for The Dodo.

As Curtis looked closer, he realized that the green thing he’d seen in the container was actually a tree frog. He was shocked — he’d never expected to find an animal, let alone a frog, in his food. The tiny amphibian, who’d been sitting in the fridge for hours, seemed just as stunned as Curtis was.
“He was really cute, and he was so cold that he was almost perfectly still,” Curtis said.
It was late December in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when Curtis found the frog. The weather was freezing, so Curtis knew he couldn’t simply put the frog outside.

“It was, like, 25 degrees out the night that I found him, so I knew that I couldn’t release him,” Curtis said.
So even though it was the middle of the night, Curtis kept the frog inside and did what he could to make him as comfortable as possible.
“I kind of turned the lettuce box into a makeshift terrarium,” Curtis said. “My intention was mainly just to get him through that night, initially.”

The next day, Curtis contacted several wildlife biologists, who explained that because the tree frog wasn’t native to Oklahoma, it would be harmful for both the frog and for the local ecosystem if he were to be released. The biologists told Curtis that the best thing would be to keep the frog inside.
“It was just kind of like, ‘Well, OK, I guess I have a new pet,’” Curtis said.
Curtis decided to name the frog Tony and to make him a permanent member of his family. He did some thorough research about tree frog care and got him set up with a proper terrarium and food.

“[H]e gets plenty of crickets and he has plenty of foliage to hide in,” Curtis said.
Thanks to Curtis going above and beyond to save the life of an unexpected stowaway, Tony has been enjoying a cozy terrarium life for the past couple of years. As an added bonus, Curtis has gained a new green friend.
“He seems to be very comfortable now,” Curtis said.
