Valerie Cherish (Lisa Kudrow) is staging her comeback again. Again.
Season 3 of HBO’s beloved mockumentary sitcom “The Comeback” premieres March 22 on HBO after first debuting at the SXSW Film & TV Festival. The trailer, which debuted online Thursday, also announces this season as the last. (I’ll believe it when I see it, series co-creator — and “And Just Like That” executive producer — Michael Patrick King, aka king of repeat revivals.)
Season 3 finds Kudrow’s character starring in a new sitcom, and again making a documentary about her life on and off the set, with a writers’ room featuring John Early, Abbi Jacobson, and, yep, AI … since this is “The Comeback” in 2026 after all. As part of her promotion for a new series called “How’s That?,” she also makes an appearance on “Hot Ones” (a must-stop for any self-deprecating and humility-chasing celebrity these days) as the trailer indicates. Plot details are otherwise scarce for the new season… and we can’t wait to see that.
The mockumentary-style series follows Kudrow as a faded-out former sitcom star desperately trying to mount a career revival. In the first season, that included hiring a camera crew to follow her around as she prepared to star as Aunt Sassy in a middling comedy series about horny roommates. In Season 2, Valerie Cherish was cast by her former nemesis, TV writer Paulie G. (Lance Barber), in a sexist HBO “dark comedy” series called “Seeing Red,” co-starring Seth Rogen and with shocking parallels to the red-headed star’s own life.
Andrew Scott is also in the cast for Season 3, along with Dan Bucatinsky, Laura Silverman, and Damian Young from the original series, plus Tim Bagley, Matt Cook, Jack O’Brien, Ella Stiller, John Early, Barry Shabaka Henley, Abbi Jacobson, Tony Macht, Brittany O’Grady, Zane Phillips, and Julian Stern.
Season 2 of the series concluded in 2014, with the original season airing in 2005.
