A chartered accountant residing in Bengaluru has triggered widespread conversation on social media after revealing a comprehensive outline of her household’s monthly spending. She disclosed that she and her partner together incur expenses amounting to ₹82,000 each month, offering a transparent glimpse into the cost of urban living for a two-member family.

Meenal Goel shared the financial details on LinkedIn, explaining the overall cost required to maintain their lifestyle in the city. According to her post, the couple pays ₹37,000 as rent for a two-bedroom apartment. Their monthly outlay on groceries and meals comes to ₹15,000, while commuting costs account for ₹5,000. Essential services such as electricity, water, and other utilities total ₹4,000, and the same amount is allocated toward domestic help. In addition, ₹17,000 is set aside for leisure and miscellaneous expenditures, which include dining at restaurants and maintaining a gym membership.

She further calculated that their total monthly spending of ₹82,000 translates to ₹9,84,000 annually. She made it clear that these figures reflect the expenses of only two individuals managing a shared household.
Her disclosure prompted mixed responses online. One social media user observed that lifestyle costs are closely tied to income levels. The commenter noted that individuals earning ₹25,000 per month also manage to survive, save funds, and support their families. The user suggested that expenses could potentially be reduced from ₹90,000 to ₹45,000, and that systematically investing the remaining ₹45,000 each month through a Systematic Investment Plan could generate significant returns over five years.

Another individual remarked that Bengaluru’s reputation as India’s Silicon Valley comes with an added financial burden, suggesting that the city demands a premium for comfort and convenience.

Several commenters emphasized the value of monitoring expenditures, pointing out that financial awareness is the first step toward achieving monetary independence. Others recommended cost-cutting measures such as sharing accommodation to lower rent, limiting restaurant visits, reconsidering gym expenses, and factoring in additional costs like travel and shopping, which could push monthly spending beyond ₹1 lakh.
