Australia’s most hated taxes – death duties – were officially abolished federally in 1979 and in all states by 1982, but there is an argument that they were partially reintroduced when the “exit” tax on concessional superannuation balances was introduced.
This tax can in be as high as 30 per cent (or 32 per cent, including the Medicare levy) for some categories of super, but is more normally 15 per cent.
