When Friends premiered on NBC back in 1994, few people could have imagined that we’d still be talking about the show more than 30 years later — or that a reproduction of the Central Perk couch would one day sell for $30,000. At the time, viewers had vague familiarity with these six faces, like Courteney Cox from Family Ties or Lisa Kudrow from Mad About You. But Marta Kauffman and David Crane’s television series about New Yorkers in their twenties — starring Cox, Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, the late Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer — quickly became a pop-culture phenomenon, in which everyone wanted “the Rachel” haircut and Ross’ “moist-maker” sandwich became a Thanksgiving staple. Friends ended more than two decades ago, but we’re still quoting it obsessively. (That includes the cast: When Wuthering Heights hit theaters last month, Aniston posted a video of a classic Season Five moment, when Phoebe and Rachel take a literature class but Rachel never got around to reading Emily Brontë’s English gothic. That Rachel, such a shrewd observer.)
All that is to say: Welcome to “The One With the Quiz.” There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Friends trivia questions out there, but they’re as easy as spinning the Wheel of Mayhem during a round of Bamboozled. We already know the name of Joey’s bedtime penguin pal (Hugsy), or the color of the 1995 Buick LeSabre (green-blue). This is one for the true diehards, who love all 236 episodes — even “The One With Ross and Monica’s Cousin.” And just a friendly reminder: Contestants are not allowed to talk to each other.
Editor’s picks
Zero to 30 percent correct: You must stop the Q-tip when there’s resistance! But in all seriousness, don’t sweat it. Maybe you just prefer Seinfeld, and that is totally fine — but remember there is no hugging in that show, and certainly no scenes where characters try to unsuccessfully put their leather pants back on with a paste made of baby powder, lotion, and a lot of anxiety. We recommend multiple rewatches on HBO Max to bring you up to speed. Maybe even play some episodes while you sleep, so you can really soak up those quotes.
Trending Stories
31 to 60 percent correct: Like Chandler, you must have majored in lightning rounds — but you still have a bit of studying to do. We recommend a full rewatch and a spin through Saul Austerlitz’s Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show That Defined a Television Era. What the hell, grab a bag of mashuga nuts from the minibar. You’ve earned it.
61 to 100 percent correct: Wow, isn’t that just kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic! You win the Geller Cup, because you’re the type of freak who can guess the episode by simply seeing a single frame — and we wouldn’t have it any other way. You probably watched the show on DVD for years, and now that they’re on streaming services, you get annoyed when spotting quotes that have been cut out. Just know you’re not alone, and that all of those lines rattling around in your head is not a waste of space — in 2030, we can download our brains onto computers and live forever as a machine. That’s what Ross says, anyway.
