Matthew Fox led one of TV’s most popular shows throughout the 2000s – and then he disappeared.

Fox, 59, soared to fame as Jack Shephard on Lost, before pumping the brakes on his career in 2014 and walking away from Hollywood.

Over the past decade, his focus has been away from the spotlight with his wife, Margherita Ronchi, and now-adult children: daughter Kyle, 28, and son Byron, 25.

“I felt like it was time to engage really intensely with my family,” Fox told Variety at the premiere of his new series, The Madison.

“I had missed some of their childhood because I was on set all the time with Lost and doing films and promoting everything. It was the right moment for me to step back and take a moment, and engage with the people that I love and care about the most in the world.”

At the height of his fame, Fox shared his dream to move his family to Oregon, where they have lived since the start of his hiatus.

”We’ve been talking about moving to Oregon for a while, so whenever things get tough, I just keep Oregon in my sights. I enjoy fishing, hiking and skiing, and the mountains and fresh air and all these things are available pretty easily in Oregon without having to drive a long distance,” he told People in 2008.

While Oregon did become home, Fox said he came to miss storytelling during his break, so when Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan called, it was an easy “yes”.

Fox first made a return to the small screen in 2022, but is now a main cast member in The Madison, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell.

The series follows Pfeiffer and Russell’s Clyburn family as they relocate to Montana from New York City after tragedy.

Fox plays Russell’s character Preston Clyburn’s brother, Paul, a bachelor who loves the outdoors.

The following year, he appeared in another Stan series, C*A*U*G*H*T.

Fox made a name for himself in Party of Five before becoming a household name with Lost, often considered one of the greatest TV series of all time.
