Cryptocurrency prediction markets are wagering on Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the U.S., even as the country’s sports minister said it is not possible given the current situation.

Polymarket odds that Iran is officially confirmed not to participate in the World Cup by the end of March rose to 37% from just 10% the day before.

The market will resolve to “Yes” through an official announcement by FIFA, the Iranian Football Federation, or another competent governing body stating that Iran will not participate in the World Cup for any reason, including disqualification, withdrawal, or suspension.

Donyamali said that the conditions for participation “no longer exist” due to what he described as “malicious actions” against Iran, including the assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeting of civilians.

In a statement, FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that he met with President Donald Trump to discuss the preparations for the event and that Trump assured him the Iranian team is “welcome to compete” in the tournament.
