HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team could not overcome a slow start in a straight-set loss to top-ranked UCLA on Saturday at a sold-out Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, and 30-28.
After Friday’s matches of the OUTRIGGER Invitational were canceled due to severe weather, the Rainbow Warriors (16-3) needed two sets to find their rhythm, pushing the Bruins into overtime in the third before eventually falling.
Adrien Roure led the way for UH with 11 kills, while Kristian Titriyski tallied nine kills coming off the bench—including eight in the third set alone. As a team, the Rainbow Warriors hit a season-low .207, which was more than 200 points lower than their season average.
Titriyski and outside hitter Finn Kearney started Set 3 and ignited a rally that included three set points. However, on UCLA’s third match-point serve, a kill by Cameron Thorne ended the contest.
The Bruins (18-0), who remain perfect on the season, were led by Sean Kelly’s 15 kills on .609 hitting with only one error in 23 attempts. Andrew Rowan directed an offense that hit .395 and served four aces, while Thorne recorded a match-high six blocks.
UCLA jumped out to an early lead in Set 1 following numerous attack errors by the Warriors. The Bruins extended that lead to 19-15 after a block on Justin Todd. Hawai’i committed seven errors in the frame, hitting .125 compared to .636 for the Bruins.
UH led 5-1 to open Set 2, but the Bruins answered immediately for a 7-6 lead. The teams traded points until the Bruins used a 5-1 run, sparked by a Kelly ace, to secure a 23-18 lead.
Hawai’i again jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start Set 3, but the Bruins quickly erased the deficit. UH’s best chance to take the set occurred at 25-24 with a swing for the set, but Kearney’s attempt was blocked. Kelly single-handedly erased two set points with kills, and the Bruins scored four of the final five points to seal the win.
In the first match of the day, Lewis defeated Mount Olive in straight sets: 26-24, 25-17, 26-24. Daniel Haber led the Flyers (13-8) with 13 kills and six blocks.
UH and Lewis will close out the tournament with a makeup match on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. The teams were originally scheduled to play on Friday. UCLA and Mount Olive will not make up their match.
