We got our eighth win in a row in all competitions with a 2-0 victory away to London City Lionesses in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Smith opened the scoring on a sunny afternoon in Bromley and Stina Blackstenius came off the bench to double our lead late on.
FIRST HALF
The home side went close early on in a first half of few chances, Sanni Franssi’s cross from the left turned over the bar from close range by former Gunner Freya Godfrey.
We found the back of the net with our first and only real opening of the first half, Chloe Kelly going past Jana Fernandez and getting the cross into the 18-yard box, where Smith was on hand to cushion it into the back of the net first time on her left foot.
There was one more opportunity on the brink of half-time, Emily Fox going for goal from distance and firing wide of the bottom right corner.
SECOND HALF
Mariona Caldentey found Katie McCabe on the edge of the area and she struck over early in the second half, before Elene Lete gave the ball away to Smith and she picked out Alessia Russo, who went around the goalkeeper but couldn’t keep the ball in play.
London City created an opening for Franssi at the other end as she fired towards goal on the half volley but straight at Anneke Borbe.
Russo’s cross was then spilled by Lete but the London City goalkeeper just about managed to regain possession with Frida Maanum lurking.
We made our first two changes with half an hour left on the clock, Kim Little and Maanum making way for Victoria Pelova and Blackstenius.
Beth Mead then came on for Smith in the 72nd minute.
It was 2-0 to the Arsenal moments later when Mariona sent the ball forward to Russo and she turned back onto her right foot before crossing for Blackstenius, who tucked it past Lete first time.
There was then a bit of a goalmouth scramble at the other end, resulting in Grace Geyoro firing wide. There was still time for two more changes as McCabe and Mariona made way for Taylor Hinds and Laia Codina respectively.
Borbe got over to her right to catch a free-kick from Kosovare Asllani in the game’s dying embers as we held onto all three points.
