Marvel’s Cyclops may finally show a new version of his mutant powers in his new X-Men leading role. The X-Men’s ranks are home to an incredibly wide variety of mutant heroes, from super-strong fighters to excellent cooks with transparent skin to psychics who can neutralize entire armies to immortal test subjects who can’t possibly be harmed, all led on the battlefield by a man who shoots beams from his eyes.
Scott Summers doesn’t need to have the most powerful or the flashiest of mutant abilities to be an influential figure to the X-Men and mutantkind as a whole. Cyclops’ most important qualities are his leadership, his discipline, his stoic mind, and his strategic thinking. These traits have probably earned him more victories than his optic blasts throughout the years.
However, even Cyclops needs a power upgrade every once in a while.
Cyclops May Now Be Able To Shape His Optic Blasts
Cyclops #5; Written by Alex Paknadel; Art by Roge Antonio
Alex Paknadel’s Cyclops run, set during the X-Men’s Shadows of Tomorrow era, sees Scott Summer lose his visor and become the prime target of Donald Pierce and his bloodthirsty Reavers. So far, Cyclops is heavily restrained by the loss of his visor and his glasses, having to rely on a blindfold, his other senses, and his tactical expertise to survive. However, by issue #5, Cyclops appears to acquire new protective eyewear, which seemingly allows him to shoot his optic blasts in the form of lightning.

The main cover for Cyclops #5, drawn by Federico Vicentini, features Scott engaging his unbroken visor, with two lightning bolts coming out of the corners of its opening and splitting in different directions. The variant cover by Declan Shalvey features Scott at rest, bearded, with no visor, seemingly shooting a controlled X-shaped beam from his eyes. Variant covers don’t necessarily tie into the actual plot of a comic, but the fact that both covers released so far reveal different shapes for Cyclops’ optic blasts suggests that Scott Summers will come back stronger from the loss of his visor.
Cyclops Needs An Upgrade To Combat His Lifelong Marvel Comics Challenge
Scott Summers Hasn’t Received A Significant Overhaul In A Long While

Cyclops with his arms folded, the X-Men arrayed behind him
Cyclops has long been the tactical backbone of the X-Men, but his static power set has begun to feel like a narrative glass ceiling in an era where his peers are evolving at a breakneck pace. Marvel’s 2026 Cyclops solo series has finally pushed Scott Summers into an uncomfortable position that demands a major breakthrough. This crisis is setting the stage for a long-overdue evolution, possibly in the form of an upgrade that allows Scott to shape his optic blasts into a variety of shapes and with different intensity.
Storm was elevated to Earth’s Mightiest Mutant in her 2025 series, while Wolverine continues to dominate the spotlight with a constant stream of lore and power upgrades. Juggernaut, Magik, Magneto, and Jean Grey have undergone multiple reinventions that give them new strengths and weaknesses. Meanwhile, Cyclops has remained largely static, often watching from the sidelines as Wolverine steals his thunder both in combat and in the hearts of the fanbase. Giving Scott the ability to manipulate the shape and nature of his energy would level the playing field.
As the primary leader of the X-Men, Cyclops’ dependence on a single piece of tech is a vulnerability that his enemies have exploited for too long. A new interface, or better yet, a mental breakthrough that allows for visor-free control, would signal a new era of confidence for the character. Whether he’s shaping his beams with his mind or using a futuristic new visor to modify his optic blasts, this change would ensure that the X-Mem’s field leader is finally weaponizing his full potential to lead mutantkind into the Shadows of Tomorrow.
