Israel has said it killed Alireza Tangsiri, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, in a targeted strike. Defence Minister Israel Katz accused him of being “directly responsible” for attacks and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has not commented.
The strait between Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman carries around 20 per cent of global oil and liquefied natural gas. Disruptions have reduced traffic by about 95 per cent, driving up global energy prices.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tangsiri had “a great deal of blood on his hands”. US Central Command described his death as making the region “safer”.
Israel also said it had “eliminated” Behnam Rezaei, head of the IRGC Navy’s intelligence directorate.
