Red Roses advance to Women’s World Cup final

England held off France on Saturday in a tight contest that saw momentum swing back and forth, and now face Canada in the final at a sold-out Allianz Stadium.

Despite two sensational scores from the returning Ellie Kildunne helping the Red Roses to victory, Brown felt there were standout performances across the entire squad.

“It’s always good to see Ellie Kildunne get the ball in space and do her thing, but it was team effort on the weekend,” said Brown.

“To see Hannah Botterman – a loose head prop – getting three turnovers, Meg Jones having an awesome game and Amy Cokayne giving clean lineout ball was unreal.

“Massive respect to France and how they played, they really kept England on their toes. But it was a whole team effort to get the win, and that’s what I really like about this England squad.”

Preparing to play Canada at Allianz Stadium

Canada knocked out defending champions New Zealand on Friday night, their varied attack and lightning-quick ruck speed proving too much for the Black Ferns.

Brown is wary of the pace and physicality that the Canadians can bring and warns that this must be nullified, but hopes that the Red Roses’ experience in big games will help guide them to a World Cup win.

“Canada’s ruck speed was very fast on Friday,” she said. “The final will be about who can come up with the best defensive system, and who can play the whole 80 minutes.

“This England team have played a lot of rugby together, and will be operating on the same level in terms of tactical decisions. I think John Mitchell has given them the tools, and it’s now up to them to use them in the right way.”
