In a recent podcast with Aaj Tak’s Arvind Ojha, Pakistani cop Chaudhry Aslam’s wife, Naureen Chaudhry, spoke about Dhurandhar: The Revenge and confirmed that its depiction of the cop’s death closely mirrors reality. Her comments came amid the massive success of the Aditya Dhar directorial, which has not only dominated the box office but also revived conversations around the real-life figures that inspired its characters.

Actor Sanjay Dutt portrayed the role of Karachi’s famed police officer SP Chaudhry Aslam in the film. In Dhurandhar 2, the officer is shown dying in a suicide car bombing – a detail she says is accurate.

Recalling the day of his death in 2014, Naureen shared a deeply personal account of his final hours. “I had just returned home from the hospital and found out he was getting ready to leave. I tried to stop him because he didn’t have a bomb-proof vehicle, but he reassured me,” she said.

Before stepping out, Chaudhry apologised to her for not being able to give her enough time. “He said, ‘Forgive me, I could never give you time,'” she recalled.

Moments after leaving, he called her again. “He said he wanted us to meet somewhere else due to security concerns,” she added. But what followed changed everything.

“Within minutes, there was a massive blast. A car carrying around 125 kg of explosives rammed into his vehicle in a suicide attack,” Naureen said, adding, “Even before any confirmation came, my heart knew he was gone.”

The attack, later claimed by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), sent shockwaves across the country. Naureen revealed that several top leaders, including Pervez Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif, personally called to offer condolences.

Chaudhry Aslam’s rivalry with Rehman Dakait

While Dhurandhar 2 dramatises many aspects of Chaudhry Aslam’s life, it also touches upon his long-standing battle with Karachi’s underworld, particularly his rivalry with gangster Rehman Dakait (played by Akshaye Khanna).

Naureen emphasised that her husband was never intimidated by the gangster. “Rehman himself had said that Chaudhry Aslam was a threat to him,” she said. After serving jail time in what she described as a politically influenced case, Chaudhry made it his mission to track him down. “He told me to pray for him. I said, within 14 days, Rehman would fall, and it happened,” she said.

According to her, Rehman was eventually traced through a phone call, leading to a fierce encounter. “There was heavy firing. Rehman was injured,” she recounted.

His death triggered chaos at Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital, where a large crowd gathered. “People tried to take away his body, but Chaudhry ensured it was sent for post-mortem,” she added, underlining his insistence on procedure even in volatile situations.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar: The Revenge blends real-world inspirations with fictional storytelling. Led by Ranveer Singh as undercover agent Hamza Ali Mazari, the film explores the underbelly of cross-border crime networks, espionage, and terror funding in Karachi’s Lyari.
